DIY American Girl Bookstore Dollhouse Room

I have been playing with the idea of creating separate doll rooms for a while. Over the years I’ve had many requests, some asking to make them out of cardboard. I really wanted to make sure I crafted quality while still staying on a budget. My goal is always to create something durable that my girls can play with without it falling apart. I’ve done many foam board projects and they hold up incredibly well! With that said, I’ve finally started making rooms….out of foam board. Originally I was going to do small 20×20 corner rooms. I liked the idea of keeping them compact. However, once I started designing the first room, I realized that was a tad too small. The new room dimensions are 20×30 and that gives you plenty of space to create something fun, play in it with dolls, and stay on a budget. Foam board sheets come in 20×30 so you don’t have to cut down the floor or the back wall. I hope to craft many corner rooms in the future so if you have any requests, leave them in the comments below!

As always, you can follow this project using wood, MDF or even cardboard! Along the way you may have to make a few slight adjustments.

Watch and tell us if you want to see more rooms!

Rudy, when you use hot glue on foam board, do you use a high heat or a low heat glue gun?

I adore this and all the books!!!! I made a bunch of books and wanted more so I made some classic book covers (kinda in the style of the old Barnes and Noble classic books. I would love to share them with anyone who wants them! I can post them on my craft blog or send them to you to share. I also have it as a kind of template that I can easily make more if anyone has requests.

I am so impressed with your creations. They are just amazing. I quite curious to know once you decide on a big project like the book store how long does it take to go from your imagination to the finished project. Do you work on more than 1 thing at a time? Thanks so much for sharing all your work.

Thank you so much! I work on at least a dozen projects at a time, some just being in my head for the brainstorming process. I have sticky notes all over my design space. They are categorized by large corner room ideas, food ideas, accessories, printables, etc. I like to look at the sticky notes daily to refresh my mind on the crafts I want to create. This helps trigger ideas even when I’m not physically crafting.

I really love this room. My daughter is so excited for me to make this room; she thinks of it as a living room. I got all the supplies today and am going to give it try. My thoughts to go with the bookstore are to make a bakery/candy shop and/or a coffee shop. So many choices. Thank you!

Hi Rudy, when you glue foam board together, do you use high heat glue gun or low heat? thank you.

    • Rudy
      July 22, 2017 at 9:03 am –

High heat! Especially for larger pieces because once it comes out it will stay hot for longer giving me time to work with it and adjust if needed.

You are amazing! The bookstore is so creative. Everything you do is so adorable. You have me looking at recyclable materials in a different way. Now I say to myself, can I use this for my AG doll or some other project? I see possibilities where I didn’t see them before. Thank you for all the inspiration.
