American Girl Maryellen

American Girl Maryellen

As you all know the new Beforever historical doll is coming out in August.  I’m not delivering any new news, you know as much as I do, BUT I do want to discuss craft ideas!!! A new doll means new ideas!  Since Maryellen is a 50’s girl, I need some help.  This era is not my strongest, and honestly I am still hoping for an 80’s doll eventually, so I need any help I can get!  Clothes, accessories, furniture, decor, anything!  Once the line comes out it will be easier to start replicating things, but until then let’s come up with our on ideas!  I was so on the ball with Grace coming out and she came into our home with a huge welcoming party.  She already had her own room, accessories, and even some furniture pieces! I want the same warm welcome for Maryellen!  So, tell me what you think about the pictures below, AND tell me how we can add or improve them!  This will be so much fun!  Remember, the more input I can get, the more great crafts that can be made!

Okay, let’s start the conversation!  What kind of furniture should we make?  I am really wanting to make Maryellen her own bedroom.  I am thinking a few toys, maybe a desk or vanity.  Chair in the bedroom?  I guess big curtains are a must?  I really don’t know!  Any advice or suggestions would be great!  And if you know of type of fabric I should get for her bedding.  This is going to be so much fun!  I guess the Our Generation Diner will come in handy for a few scenes!

They must have been reading your blog because there are rumors of a retro fridge coming soon!

Those rumors are true! Maryellen is supposed to get a retro fridge! Yay!

(PS: also, on eBay there are tons of metal kitchen sets actually from the era, usually always a sink, stove, and matching fridge, which are the perfect scale for AG girls and their furnishings. They are tin, and companies like Marx and Wolverine made them, and show up often at fair prices! And in great period pastel colors! AND it’s the real thing made in the real time period, even better!)

I want to do the same; I bought two of these sets because what living room only has one lamp? Ha ha! Same with the table, got three, and an altering one to make a matching coffee table. Spikey legs are a must, like that stereo image you have, a friend of mine suggesting using the ends of artist’s paintbrushes! (For chairs or additional occasional tables). The retired Molly 40’s red chrome kitchen table set is actually more 50’s than 40’s and works great. Also, for accents, make or find little boomerang or kidney shaped dishes (as centerpieces, and, yes, ASHTRAYS), and for wall-hangings, find hi-resolution images of starburst clocks and abstract wall art (type in Atomic 1950’s [fill in the blank). Those can be printed out to scale on heavy stock paper and cut out. I am learning how to use a jig saw, so I can make a blonde wood Haywood Wakefield style dining table too! I LOVE this set of stuff!

Full skirts with stiff stiff full crenoline petticoats. Kind of like barn dancing ones only not soft. We hated to wash them since the stiffness was lost. Mom’s washed them when you weren’t looking and then ruined them. They were really itchy and scratchy so you had to wear a soft slip under them We’d sometimes wear several of them at once.

If you were going to make her a bedroom, you can do a “Peanuts” theme, since that comic strip came out during her time.

That would be awesome if they came out with a 80’s girl!We would definitely buy that doll.

Watch some old TV shows for inspiration. Think Happy Days. 🙂 I would make a Arnold’s Pizza Shop.Things haven’t changed much, kids used to like hanging out at the local food places. Jukeboxes were awesome too. I been thinking hard how to make one for our dolls. Record players are a bonus.

      That’s a great idea!

Love the Malt Shop Idea! My Granddaughters would have a great time with that (and so would I)! Or maybe a Drive In Movie?

My mother was a teenager in the 50’s. Some things that were relevant then were: Records & Record players, radios, Drive in Movies, Penny Loafers, Saddle Shoes, sweaters with the buttons done up the back (a fad to wear the sweaters backwards), Poodle Skirts, Hair Curlers and Dryers (no curling irons or hot rollers), “Dippity-Doo” hair setting gel, Pin Curls (sometimes called “spit curls”) done with bobby-pins, and “cleansing cream” for your face. Tap Dancing, Cony Island hot dogs, The World’s Fair.

If I think of any more, I’ll post it!

You HAVE to do a poodle skirt if you haven’t already, or just some of those full circle skirts. And maybe a malt shop.

Disney has a 50’s Prime Time Cafe restaurant at their Hollywood Studios Park – their should be a lot of photos of it on line.
I grew up in the 50’s and when we go in their I always see something we either had at home or someone else did.
The TV was very major to most homes – so a great 50’s TV project would be fun! Picture needs to be black and white.

I made a 50’s record player last year for Doll Diaries and Livingadollslife blogs. I could send you pictures. It was very easy to make and took very little time.

I agree, the Play Doh is a must! We can make little tubes and place them in her room.
