DIY Harry Potter Sorting Hat

Halloween is right around the corner and that’s usually when the most Harry Potter crafts, decorations and costumes come out! One thing we were missing in our doll Harry Potter Collection was the very iconic Sorting Hat! This craft is so easy and it’s made with just paper! We like a good messy paper mache craft every now and then, but, if you aren’t down for the mess, you can use a paint brush and regular glue or Mod Podge. All the kids got in on this craft. We had several paper mache crafts going on all at once. We were experimenting with covering a balloon half way and then popping it to form a bowl. It was fun!  I shared with them that I starting doing paper mache crafts when I was young. I didn’t always have a lot of craft supplies like they do, but I did have recycled paper, flour and water! As the oldest child of five, I always loved to help my mom with the younger kids birthdays. I made customized pinatas that coordinated with the party themes. It was so much fun seeing the reactions of my siblings or their friends. And then of course they were smashed to bits!

Materials Needed:

  • Paper or Card Stock
  • 6-8″ Circle for tracing
  • Tape
  • Newspaper or Recycled Coloring Book Pages
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Paint

Watch and tell us which House the Sorting Hat would put you in!

Don’t miss out on all the other fun Harry Potter crafts we’ve done!

My daughter and I love watching your videos. You have great inspiration and easy to follow instructions. Could you make a doll drive in? Like a Sonic type stall or something to add to the diner? Thank you for all the wonderful crafts!

Hey Rudy I just relized. Using the Luciana space camp bench for example, you show us how to make the lot of money very cheap. You work hard, thank you VERY much.

Very cute. I plan to make it large enough to fit on a doll’s head like in the Harry Potter movie. I think using a brown paper grocery bag will work great!
