DIY American Girl Dress cut with Cricut Maker

I am over the moon excited to finally show you the new Cricut Maker in action! I have used Cricut cutters for a long time and nothing compares to what the new Maker can do.  I still love the Cricut Explore and plan on doing many projects using it, but I will also use the Maker to create things you never would have guessed a Cricut could make! The first project with the new Maker is this doll button-up dress. Since the Maker can cut fabrics without backing, I thought it would be fun to start with a sewing project. You may notice currently I don’t do many sewing projects, but that is all about to change. I see many coming our way!

Please keep in mind that I am no expert seamstress, so my techniques may be a little different than yours. I started sewing at a young age, but I’ve always sewn without a pattern. Most of the time it’s just an idea in my head and I cut for it as I go. Seriously, I’ve made dresses and outfits for my girls with nothing more than a tape measure. I’ve never liked patterns. They stress me out and I enjoy the process more without them. Still, I don’t sew all the time so there are many things I can improve on. That’s why I love the new Maker. It eliminates me having to shop in a store for a pattern. No more cutting out the tissue paper, pinning, and cutting some more. None of that! I can do the part that I actually enjoy, which is sewing, and not worry about cutting the pattern. Yay!

Once you watch the video and see how the Maker cuts the fabric, let me know what other sewing projects you’d like to see!

I can’t stand tissue paper patterns either. I much prefer patterns that I can print out on computer paper. They are way easier to pin to the fabric to cut out. They have significantly changed my view on sewing. I do way more sewing for the dolls now that I can purchase printable sewing patterns online. ?

Kate yes I did if you want to make them measure and cut out the shape of the glasses (be sure to make holes for your dolls eyes) in doll size and then (if you want) color them cover both sides with packaging tape and trim off the extra tape (don’t cut the tape out of the place were the doll sees out of) and color the back of the eye holes with a black sharpie and then cover the sharpie markings with tape so it doesn’t rub off on your doll add mirrored scrap book paper on the outside you can use the same technique to make solar viewers too.

I agree with Adele and Terri the cricket maker is too expensive especially if i’m only going to use it to make doll stuff please either make a mix of tutorials that you can make with or without a cricket maker or keep making what you usually make. Please make orthodontist stuff!

I agree with Terri, this is a really cute dress and I’d love to make it but I really can’t ask my parents to get me a $400 machine for no reason. Maybe if you could come up with crafts that can be made with or without the Maker you could continue to do tutorials with your machine and people without the machine could also do something?

There are thousands of crafts that can be done with the Cricut Maker. You can even start your own business by using a Cricut Maker and earn the money back! Get creative.

Rudy, I only have the original cricut and I love it but I think it’s so neat that this one will cut out doll clothes pattern pieces. My question is, can you somehow download or import your own patterns? I use a lot of patterns from pixiefaire.com. Is there some way to use those patterns with the cricut maker? Or are you limited to what they offer?

There is a way to create your own patterns and upload patterns. They have to be saved properly and I’m testing the process now.

You can still buy the paper pattern and cut it out the old fashioned way. The Cricut just saves a lot of time on these projects so I can do multiple things at once.

Adorable. I love seeing doll clothes because it saves so much money!

Terri, you can make this craft with a pattern from the store as well. I am still saving up for a cricut, so for now that is what I do. I also sometimes don’t use a pattern. ?

Hi Rudy, the dress you made is nice. Unfortunately, I can not afford to buy the $400 cricut machine.

I’ve always enjoyed American Girl ideas because the crafts can be made without a lot of money. I do hope you will continue to craft things that an average person can afford.
