American Girl Doll Melody Ellison Review

We pre-ordered Melody by taking advantage of the American Girl Rewards offer. You can become an AG Rewards member by signing up on the AG website. It’s no cost and it gives you points that build up for coupons. Much like other stores rewards system. I remember Kroger being the very first store rewards program I signed up for. After that is was DSW!

Breakdown

Melody-

Melody is a cute doll. She has the Sonali face mold with brown eyes. Nothing new about her face or coloring. Her hair is what makes her Melody. It is textured and about armpit level but with a flip at the bottom that makes it appear a little shorter. She also has straight forehead bangs with a part in the middle.  Like I mention in the review, her hair is swooshed to one side in the box, making one side a little different than the other. You can style it easily, but the flip will not be identical on both sides without some help. The hair is very soft and very shiny. Love the hair. It would have been cool to see her come with a roller at the bottom of her hair to keep the flip in shape while in the box until opened.

I received several emails asking if I could show her ears in my review. I did and they look normal for her face mold. I have two other Sonali molds and they both have the exact same ears. I also showed different face molds ears in the video so you can see them up close in comparison.

Her meet is on point! Not only is is a beautiful color combo, but the material is A+. I am very very happy with the meet dress! I had a similar one a long time ago that was black and white AND a black hat that matched. Maybe I can dig up a picture of that!

Fancy Dress-

I do not like it. Let’s start by saying what I do like. I like the shoes and the gloves. However, the shoes were a pain to get on. For some reason they were smaller than the meet shoes. It was a struggle to get them on without socks and once they were on her toes were pushing through the sides. I like the pattern of the dress, but the material is so bad. It feels like a shower curtain. I just can’t get over that. Because it’s a plastic material, the pinks or salmons are off color from the shoes and headband making them appear a neon color. Part of me wonders if it was placed in the bundle for this reason……

Hairstyling Set-

The headband piece is very cute. I like how simple it is for girls to put in and style on their own. The hair is longer than Melody’s which make it fun to use. It gives her a completely new look. The bow and flower clip are very easy to put on and take off.

Pet Bo-

Bo is furry and very scraggly looking. But we LOVE him! He does come with a bow leash just like Grace’s Bon Bon where you can pull it out for walks and roll it back up into a bow. The leash could be a little longer. The dolls can only hold it when their hand is almost all the way to their side.

Accessories-

The accessories are great. The pillbox hat is nice and sturdy, the pin is a perfect touch to her story, the clutch is simple and the glasses are on point! Love those things! I am still a fan of cat eye glasses!

Thank you for this detailed review! My daughter and I traveled to NYC for the Melody release party. We wanted to see her in person before we decided to buy her. She was very pretty and we did bring her home! I looked at all of it closely and I had to agree with you about the floral dress. Such a shame because I loved the dress! Pixie Fair sells a sewing pattern that is just like it. I bought the wig and plan to sew Melody that dress myself. We also brought home the microphone. I was delighted to see it actually works! I felt it would be lots of fun for that price and so far, all my kids love it. The piano is a real working electric keyboard and well made. If you aren’t planning to invest in the recording studio, the microphone and piano could be a very good substitute.

My favorite is her meet outfit and accessories. I also have the Rewards Bundle. Although I like the looks of her Fancy Dress, it is a strange fabric. It was very hard to put it on the doll and it is so tight that Melody can not sit down unless you pull the skirt above her hips.

I agree it is a very weird dress. I love the floral print and the style, just wish the fabric was more like her meet.
